Boom Festival at a glance

Boom is in its 30th-anniversary cycle, with the next full edition scheduled for 18–25 July 2027 at Boomland beside Idanha-a-Nova Lake. Boom Festival is a Portuguese psychedelic culture gathering whose historical importance extends beyond its dance floors. It began in 1997 with a Goa Trance identity and subsequently developed into a multidisciplinary festival combining psychedelic music, visual and performative arts, talks and learning spaces, community practices, and a highly visible environmental programme.

The festival's permanent home, Boomland, makes the site itself part of Boom's identity. The land functions as a year-round cultural and regeneration project instead of only a temporary event field, with permanent art, landscape work and ecological initiatives.

How Boom Festival evolved

The first Boom Festival took place from 14 to 16 August 1997 at Herdade do Zambujal. Early editions remained connected to that site before the festival moved to the Idanha-a-Nova area in 2002. Idanha-a-Nova has hosted Boom since 2002.

The festival site is Boomland on the shores of the Idanha-a-Nova lake area. The modern Boomland project extends that evolution into permanent land stewardship, art and education. The festival was disrupted by the COVID-era postponement of its planned 2020 cycle, returning in 2022.

As of August 2026, Boom remains active: the organisation has announced the 16th edition for 18–25 July 2027, marking 30 years since the first edition.

Music, programming & dancefloors

Goa Trance is fundamental to Boom's origin story, while Psytrance remains a central musical language of the contemporary festival. Over time, however, Boom deliberately expanded beyond a single trance format. Its programme is distributed across distinct areas such as the Dance Temple, Alchemy Circle, The Gardens and Sacred Fire, allowing psychedelic dance music to coexist with other electronic, acoustic and experimental forms.

Broader electronic programming should not be misread as proof that every adjacent electronic genre is a core Boom identity.

Role in psytrance festival culture

Boom became one of the most internationally visible meeting points of psychedelic festival culture, combining music with visionary and installation art, performance, talks, healing and learning practices, and community-oriented spaces. Its significance is partly the way it helped normalize the idea of the psytrance festival as a multidisciplinary cultural environment , not a sequence of DJ sets. Its long relationship with Idanha-a-Nova is also regionally significant.

The municipality's UNESCO-linked City of Music material identifies Boom as a major local music event, while Boom's own cultural model ties the gathering to a permanent rural site , not a purely touring event brand. A second defining strand is environmental practice. Boomland is presented as a continuing regeneration project, and the festival publicly connects infrastructure, landscape work, resource use and cultural production.

These claims are part of the festival's ethos rather than as a blanket claim that every edition has been impact-free.
