Biography

Freedom Fighters is the psychedelic trance project of Israeli producer Shahaf Efrat. Active since 2006, the project developed within Israel’s already mature Psytrance scene but quickly became known for moving across its internal borders instead of staying inside one formula. Early touring began around 2007, while relationships with HOMmega and figures in the Israeli scene helped establish Efrat internationally.

The first full-length album, Rebel, arrived in 2015. Edge followed in 2017 and pushed further into darker, more experimental progressive territory, drawing on techno and the heavier psychedelic styles that were increasingly crossing into Progressive Psytrance. The 2020 album Era consolidated that evolution while collaborations with artists such as Ace Ventura, Captain Hook, HypoGeo, Pspiralife and others demonstrated how widely Efrat moved across the contemporary scene.

Freedom Fighters also became part of the label story of Stereo Society, extending Efrat’s role from artist to curator and scene-builder. In 2026 the project is still appearing on major festival lineups, moving between progressive, psychedelic and techno-influenced forms without treating those categories as rigid boundaries.

Origins of Freedom Fighters

Shahaf Efrat launched Freedom Fighters in Israel in 2006. Touring followed soon afterwards, with the project developing through the same national network that had already produced several generations of internationally recognised psytrance artists.

Early career

The early years were shaped by extensive touring and a close relationship with HOMmega. Instead of immediately centring the project around albums, Efrat built its identity through singles, collaborations and live experience before releasing Rebel in 2015.

How the career developed

Edge in 2017 expanded Freedom Fighters into darker and more techno-influenced territory. Collaborations with MVMB, HypoGeo, Pspiralife and other artists further connected the project to the late-2010s exchange between Progressive Psytrance, dark progressive and psytech aesthetics.

Era in 2020 arrived through Stereo Society, the label platform with which Efrat is closely associated, and reinforced the project’s refusal to be reduced to a single secondary subgenre.

Freedom Fighters sound

Freedom Fighters moves through Progressive Psytrance and broader Psytrance with frequent excursions into darker progressive textures, techno-influenced rhythm and occasional Full-On or Goa references. The balance changes from release to release, making period-specific description more accurate than one fixed label.

Place in psytrance history

The project is a useful marker of how Progressive Psytrance changed during the 2010s, absorbing darker psychedelic and techno-derived ideas without losing its connection to the main psytrance dancefloor. Freedom Fighters helped normalise that stylistic permeability within the modern festival circuit.

Connections and influence

Important connections include Ace Ventura, Captain Hook, LOUD, Outsiders, HypoGeo, Pspiralife and the Stereo Society network. The label work matters because it places Efrat within the curatorial development of the scene as well as its performance circuit.

Freedom Fighters today

Freedom Fighters remains active in 2026, with current festival appearances and ongoing activity around Stereo Society.
