Biography

HypoGeo is the project of Italian producer Giuseppe Fusco, a major figure in the darker, experimental end of progressive psychedelic music. Developed from the late 2000s onward, the project became especially closely associated with Zenon Records and the sound often described as dark progressive or Zenonesque.

The album Tree of Lies on Zenon Records in 2015 is a central work in the HypoGeo catalogue. Its slow-burning structures, distorted organic textures and heavy, elastic groove pushed well away from conventional melodic progressive psytrance. Fusco has also collaborated widely, working with artists including Electrypnose, Hellquist, Evil Oil Man and BrainJam, and has participated in the SCHROTT project.

HypoGeo remains active in the current underground psychedelic circuit. Later releases have continued to explore the border between dark progressive trance, psy-techno and experimental bass-heavy electronics. The project is important because it treats psychedelia as a matter of timbre, spatial design and rhythmic instability instead of relying on familiar Goa or full-on motifs.

Origins of HypoGeo

By 2009 Nicola Grigatti had signed the HypoGeo project to Zenon Records after a background including death metal and industrial music influences.

Early career

A 2012 contemporaneous interview documents the Zenon signing in 2009 and the earlier Wars, Worms and Whores EP. Tree of Lies followed as the first full-length album in 2012.

How the career developed

Tree of Lies became a defining dark-progressive/Zenonesque release. HypoGeo later collaborated repeatedly with Electrypnose and formed SCHROTT with Kromagon. In 2026 Grigatti founded SubЯitual Records and released Protocol Zero with Electrypnose.

HypoGeo sound

HypoGeo blends dark progressive psytrance with techno, broken texture and heavily processed organic sound. Slow, elastic basslines, disorienting atmospheres and intricate microscopic detail are central to the project.

Place in psytrance history

An important bridge between Zenon’s dark progressive/Zenonesque sound and the heavier industrial, minimal and Psy-Techno-adjacent end of modern psychedelic music.

Connections and influence

Connects the Italian scene with Australian Zenon Records, Berlin/German psychedelic networks, Electrypnose and newer SubЯitual material.

HypoGeo today

Active in 2026 as HypoGeo and founder of SubЯitual Records. Protocol Zero with Electrypnose was released 26 February 2026.
