Biography

Tristan is the project of British producer and DJ Tristan Cooke, whose connection to psychedelic trance reaches back to the scene’s formative years. After travelling in India, he became involved with the Goa party culture and returned to Britain as the London trance network was taking shape. Early releases in the mid-1990s led to the 1998 album Audiodrome on Twisted Records.

Unlike many artists from the same generation, Tristan did not become primarily a nostalgia act. His production evolved with Psytrance while retaining the loose, deeply psychedelic quality of the earlier era. He later became one of the artists most closely identified with NANO Records, releasing a substantial solo discography while also forming Fearsome Engine with Laughing Buddha and Killerwatts with Avalon.

Tristan remains highly active in 2026 as both a solo artist and collaborator. Recent NANO activity includes new releases and the 8ternal Beings project with Regan Tacon. More than three decades of continuous DJing and production make his career unusual: he connects the original Goa culture directly to the current festival scene without a long historical break between the two.

Origins of Tristan

Tristan Cooke became involved in the psychedelic-trance community in the early 1990s, with repeated seasons in Goa and an important role in the emerging UK Goa/Psytrance network.

Early career

artist material links Tristan to the period when Goa Trance and Psytrance terminology and culture were taking shape. This supports an early Goa Trance period alongside the broader Psytrance identity, without treating the genres as interchangeable.

How the career developed

Tristan became a cornerstone of NANO Records, released solo albums including Way of Life (2014) and Crazy Wisdom (2022), and worked in separate collaborations such as Killerwatts, Fearsome Engine and 8ternal Beings.

Tristan sound

Driving, deeply psychedelic Full-On/Psytrance with elastic bass, organic sound design and a strong emphasis on flow rather than short-form hooks. His later work retains clear traces of the freer early Goa approach.

Place in psytrance history

Tristan is historically significant as a participant in the early UK/Goa psychedelic-trance network and as a long-running NANO Records figure linking the formative scene to contemporary festival Psytrance.
