What defined Twisted Records
Twisted Records grew out of the same mid-1990s UK psychedelic scene that produced Hallucinogen, but it quickly became much more than a conventional trance label. Founded in 1996, Twisted built its identity around a small group of producers who treated albums as complete worlds rather than collections of dancefloor tracks.
That approach gave the label an unusually broad musical footprint. Hallucinogen kept one foot firmly in psychedelic trance, while Shpongle pushed into downtempo, global instrumentation and studio psychedelia. Prometheus and Younger Brother widened the palette again, making Twisted a natural meeting point between psytrance, ambient, electronica and experimental songwriting.
How Twisted Records developed
Twisted emerged after Simon Posford had already become one of the defining producers of the first Goa-trance wave. From the start, the label provided a long-term home for music that did not fit neatly into the faster release cycle of club-focused trance labels. That became especially important as Shpongle developed from a side project into one of psychedelic electronic music's best-known album acts.
The company survived the contraction of the physical-record market by becoming more selective rather than disappearing. Its release schedule slowed, but the core catalogue remained in circulation and Twisted continued to issue new projects, reissues and deluxe editions. The label's own 2020s activity includes Simon Posford solo material, Shpongle-related releases and archival Hallucinogen editions.
People, organisation & management
Twisted has always been closely associated with Simon Posford and the creative circle around him. Simon Holtom has also been a central company figure, and current UK company records continue to connect Posford and Holtom with Twisted Records Limited.
instead of operating as a high-volume label with a constantly changing roster, Twisted has functioned more like a stable creative house. Long relationships with Shpongle, Hallucinogen, Prometheus, Younger Brother and later artists such as Cosmic Trigger are a major part of why the catalogue feels coherent despite its stylistic range.
Sound, roster & A&R direction
Psychedelic trance is the foundation of Twisted's story, especially through Hallucinogen, but the label's defining quality is its refusal to stay inside one tempo or formula. Its catalogue moves from full psychedelic dance music into dub, ambient, downtempo, progressive electronic music, live instrumentation and detailed studio composition.
Shpongle in particular helped establish a strand of psychedelic downtempo that became hugely influential within psybient and festival culture. Twisted therefore belongs in psytrance history while also standing apart from labels whose identity is primarily based on dancefloor subgenre consistency.
Place in psytrance history
Twisted helped demonstrate that artists from the Goa and psytrance world could build long-form, internationally recognised albums without abandoning psychedelic production. That mattered at a time when much of the scene was still organised around singles, compilations and DJ-oriented releases.
The label also created a durable bridge between the original UK Goa generation and the later global psybient audience. Its best-known records became reference points not only for trance listeners, but for people entering psychedelic electronic music through chill-out rooms, live bands and downtempo festival stages.
Scene impact & cultural reach
Twisted's influence reaches beyond its release catalogue. Its artwork, events and artist relationships helped shape a recognisable British psychedelic aesthetic that was playful, surreal and technically meticulous without being tied to one club format.
Because the same community moved between dancefloor psytrance and slower psychedelic music, Twisted also helped normalise the idea that those sounds belonged to one wider culture rather than separate scenes.
Key releases & catalogue moments
Hallucinogen's classic catalogue established the label's trance credentials, while Shpongle's albums turned Twisted into an international reference point for psychedelic downtempo. Prometheus and Younger Brother broadened the imprint further, and later projects such as Cosmic Trigger kept the catalogue connected to a new generation.
Recent activity has included remastered Hallucinogen vinyl editions, Shpongle-related releases and Simon Posford's Flux & Contemplation, showing that Twisted's current role combines new work with careful stewardship of its most important catalogue.
