The story behind The ZAP!

The ZAP! is the psychedelic electronic collaboration of Benji Vaughan and Raja Ram. Vaughan brought the studio language developed through Prometheus and Younger Brother, while Raja Ram brought the long history of The Infinity Project, TIP Records and Shpongle. The result was deliberately difficult to categorise, built as a separate project , not a disguised extension of any one of those better-known names.

The duo's major statement was the 2008 album Big Bang on TIP.World. Its music jumps between psytrance, electro, downtempo and eccentric psychedelic structures, often changing direction inside a track instead of settling into one fixed dance-floor formula. The later Balloonatik EP, released through Twisted Records in 2017, showed that the name retained creative value well after the debut rather than belonging only to a single album cycle.

The ZAP! has been intermittent rather than continuously active, reflecting the extensive separate careers of both members. The ZAP! brings together two major strands of British psychedelic music: Raja Ram's TIP/Goa lineage and Vaughan's Twisted-era production world. The project remains a particularly clear example of psytrance artists using collaboration to escape the stylistic expectations attached to their primary names.
