Samothraki Dance Festival

Samothraki Dance Festival was an early-2000s Greek Psytrance gathering on Samothraki Island whose large international editions became a landmark of Mediterranean festival culture.

Samothraki Dance Festival

Samothraki Dance Festival at a glance

Samothraki Dance Festival was one of the defining large-scale Psytrance gatherings of the early 2000s. Developed from the Sola Luna project and held on the Aegean island of Samothraki, it brought major international trance acts into a remote island environment and became an influential reference point for Greek and international festival culture.

How Samothraki Dance Festival evolved

The Samothraki lineage begins with Sola Luna in 2001 and continued through Samothraki Dance Festival editions in the early 2000s. The large 2002 and 2003 gatherings are particularly well documented and drew an international audience before the original festival run ended. Later Greek organisers, including people involved in Free Earth, have explicitly treated the Samothraki years as part of the country’s important Psytrance-festival history.

Music, programming & dancefloors

Goa Trance and Psytrance dominated the identity, with lineups spanning leading live acts, DJs and psychedelic chill. The programme reflected the transition from classic Goa into the increasingly diverse early-2000s Psytrance sound.

Role in psytrance festival culture

Samothraki is historically significant because it demonstrated that Greece could host a large destination Psytrance gathering with a truly international audience. The island setting and ambitious lineups became part of scene memory and influenced later Greek festival projects.
