Transahara Festival at a glance
Transahara brought the Psytrance festival model into the Moroccan Sahara, using the desert itself as the defining cultural and environmental frame. Its remote Merzouga-area gatherings combined international trance lineups with camping and a deliberately isolated, temporary-community experience.
How Transahara Festival evolved
The Transahara concept was developed in the late 1990s. A planned June 2002 edition was cancelled during an international crisis and the project moved into the 2003-era launch period; later editions established the festival in the Merzouga/Sahara circuit.
Music, programming & dancefloors
Psytrance and Goa Trance were the principal dancefloor identities, with progressive, full-on and psychedelic chill appearing in different editions.
Role in psytrance festival culture
Transahara is important because it extended international Psytrance festival culture into North Africa and made the Sahara landscape an active part of the gathering’s identity. It also reflects the scene’s long connection between music, travel and remote-site temporary communities.
