What defined Spun Records

Spun Records emerged around GMS at the turn of the millennium and became one of the labels most closely identified with the full-on psytrance explosion of the 2000s. Its network connected the United States, Ibiza and an increasingly international festival circuit at a moment when psytrance production and touring were becoming truly global.

Spun’s catalogue is strongly associated with GMS, but it was not simply a vehicle for one act. Wrecked Machines, Deedrah, Shanti, Perplex and other artists helped make the label a reference point for the polished, high-energy dancefloor sound of the period.

How Spun Records developed

The first known Spun releases appeared in 1999, followed by sustained activity through the 2000s. As GMS became one of psytrance’s most heavily touring acts, the label grew alongside that international network and helped circulate the sound that came to be known as full-on.

Spun’s peak coincided with the mid-2000s festival boom. Albums, collaborations and compilations reached audiences across Europe, Israel, Brazil, Japan and North America. The known release programme winds down around 2009, after which GMS and associated artists continued elsewhere rather than reviving Spun as an active label.

People, organisation & management

GMS members Riktam Matkin and Bansi Quinteros were central to the label’s identity and artist network. Seth Hoffman and Bradd Hosking are also associated with its organisational foundation. Spun’s business and creative structure was closely intertwined with GMS touring, studio collaborations and the Ibiza psychedelic community.

Sound, roster & A&R direction

Full-on psytrance became the defining Spun sound: fast, tightly engineered, immediate and built for large dancefloors. Earlier material retains more of the late-Goa and classic psychedelic vocabulary, but the label’s lasting reputation comes from the muscular, polished 2000s full-on style.

Place in psytrance history

Spun was one of the labels that helped turn full-on from a developing style into an international psytrance standard. Its artists and releases were deeply embedded in the festival circuit during the genre’s rapid global expansion.

Scene impact & cultural reach

The label embodies the Ibiza-centred internationalism of 2000s psytrance, where producers from different countries lived, collaborated and toured through the same small network. Spun’s influence was therefore social and organisational as well as musical.

Key releases & catalogue moments

The first releases around 1999, the GMS/Systembusters period, GMS’s Emergency Broadcast System and Wrecked Machines’ Second Thought in 2005 are major landmarks, alongside the label’s many collaborations and compilations from the full-on peak years.
