What defined Matsuri Digital
Matsuri Digital is the Japanese revival of Matsuri Productions, the influential Goa-trance label founded in London in November 1994 by DJ Tsuyoshi Suzuki and John Perloff. Instead of treating the original catalogue as a closed historical object, Matsuri Digital brought it back into circulation while creating a platform for new psychedelic music from Tokyo.
The modern organisation links reissues, contemporary releases, events, artist bookings and related sublabels. That makes Matsuri Digital both an archival continuation and a living extension of one of the first-generation Goa-trance labels.
How Matsuri Digital developed
Matsuri Productions operated from 1994 until 1999 and released a large run of vinyl singles, artist albums and compilations during Goa trance’s formative international period. The label then became dormant.
Matsuri’s own current history marks a return as Matsuri Digital from Tokyo in 2009, while its Japanese “About” text describes Tsuyoshi and DJ Yuta rebuilding the project around 2013. The safest reading is that the revival began around 2009 and developed into its present organisational form during the early 2010s. It later expanded into Matsuri Beats Bookings, Matsuri Digital Groove and Matsuri Digital Chill.
People, organisation & management
DJ Tsuyoshi Suzuki and John Perloff founded the original London label. The revived Tokyo operation is led by Tsuyoshi with later collaborators including DJ Yuta. Matsuri Beats Bookings and the Groove and Chill sublabels extend the modern organisation without erasing the distinction between the original 1990s label and its digital-era successor.
Sound, roster & A&R direction
Classic Goa trance is the historical foundation. Matsuri Digital also releases contemporary psychedelic and progressive trance, while dedicated Groove and Chill branches make room for alternative psychedelic and downtempo material. The wider Matsuri identity is therefore deliberately broader than a nostalgia-only Goa revival.
Place in psytrance history
Matsuri Digital is one of the clearest direct bridges between the first international Goa-trance label era and the modern revival of that music. Because the original founder remains central, the revival has unusual continuity compared with purely archival reissue projects.
Scene impact & cultural reach
The move from London to Tokyo also reflects the long relationship between Japanese audiences and Goa/psytrance culture. Matsuri’s modern events and artist network turn that history into an active Japanese psychedelic platform instead of simply a reissue brand.
Key releases & catalogue moments
The original 1994–1999 Matsuri Productions catalogue is the foundation. The revival from around 2009, renewed circulation of Prana and other classic material, the early-2010s Tokyo rebuilding and the 2016–2017 launch of Matsuri Beats Bookings, Matsuri Digital Groove and Matsuri Digital Chill define the modern phase.
