Psychedelic Circus

Psychedelic Circus was a long-running northern German Goa and Psytrance open-air festival, founded in the late 1990s and known for combining dance floors with elaborate circus-themed decoration and performance.

Psychedelic Circus

Psychedelic Circus at a glance

Psychedelic Circus was one of northern Germany’s long-running Goa and Psytrance festivals. Its roots reach to June 1999, and surviving archive material describes the 2007 gathering as the ninth edition. The festival built its identity around a simple but durable idea: turn an open-air Psytrance event into a temporary psychedelic circus of decoration, performers, fantasy characters and large-scale visual environments.

For many years Strohkirchen and the Hagenow area were closely associated with the festival before later editions moved to Göhlen in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The programme ranged across Goa, Psytrance, Progressive Psytrance, Full-On, Darkpsy and chillout, with circus and fire performance giving the event a theatrical character.

After a pandemic-era gap, Psychedelic Circus returned in Göhlen in May 2022. Organiser material then described that edition as the end of the festival’s history 'for the time being', and a planned 2023 edition was cancelled. With no later return confirmed, the festival is currently inactive.

How Psychedelic Circus evolved

The first Psychedelic Circus took place in the late 1990s, with archive evidence supporting June 1999 as the starting point. By 2003 it was already being billed as Part 6, and by 2007 as the ninth edition. Strohkirchen became the defining early location, helping the festival build a loyal following within Germany’s expanding Goa open-air scene.

Through the 2000s and 2010s the event changed sites and production scale but retained the circus concept. The 2011 edition was promoted as one of the first northern European festivals to use specialised 3D decoration on a large scale. After the pandemic interruption, the 2022 Göhlen edition marked a final return before the organisers paused the project.

Music, programming & dancefloors

Psychedelic Circus covered a broad classic German Goa-festival spectrum: Goa Trance, Progressive Psytrance, Psytrance, Full-On, Darkpsy and chillout. Large international acts appeared alongside German scene regulars, while night-time programming could move into faster and harder territory.

The festival was therefore musically broad by Psytrance standards, but it stayed firmly inside psychedelic electronic culture instead of becoming a general dance festival.

Role in psytrance festival culture

Psychedelic Circus mattered because it helped establish the decorative and theatrical language that became characteristic of German Goa festivals: 3D structures, fluorescent environments, fire performance, fantasy characters and immersive stage worlds.

Its longevity from the late 1990s into the 2020s also made it a bridge between the first major German Goa open-air generation and later festival culture.

Place, setting & atmosphere

The festival used rural northern German sites with camping and open-air floors. Weather, ground conditions and temporary infrastructure were therefore practical parts of the experience, but the surviving record does not justify presenting the event as environmentally certified.

The physical setting mattered mainly as a canvas for the temporary circus world built by decoration and production crews.
