What defined Trans'Pact
Trans’Pact was one of the formative French Goa-trance labels of the early 1990s. Closely associated with Gilbert Thévenet—better known through projects including Martin Cooper and Asia 2001—it developed a distinctive melodic, psychedelic sound that became a reference point for the emerging French scene.
The label’s catalogue was heavily artist-driven, with Thévenet appearing under multiple project names alongside other contributors. Its records circulated through the same parties and international networks that were defining Goa trance before “psytrance” became the dominant umbrella term.
How Trans'Pact developed
Trans’Pact activity began in the early 1990s, with singles and compilations followed by albums such as Asia 2001’s Psykadelia. Contemporary reissue notes and later archival releases consistently describe the label as an important foundation of French Goa trance.
The original operation ended in the late 1990s after the collapse of its distributor, but the music did not disappear. Later authorised reissues through labels including Avatar and Suntrip brought rare Trans’Pact material back into circulation and helped establish its reputation with a new generation of Goa listeners.
People, organisation & management
Gilbert Thévenet was the dominant creative figure behind Trans’Pact and used several aliases and projects across the catalogue. Surviving historical accounts also connect the original operation to his wife Thaisha. Because many releases were built around Thévenet’s own projects, the boundary between artist, producer and label curator was unusually close.
Sound, roster & A&R direction
Classic melodic Goa trance defines Trans’Pact: bright acid lines, expansive atmospheres, rolling rhythms and a strongly psychedelic sense of movement. The catalogue has a recognisable period character that differs from both later full-on psytrance and the darker styles that followed.
Place in psytrance history
Trans’Pact helped lay the foundations of the French psychedelic-trance scene and gave Asia 2001’s early work a home. Its later cult reputation also reflects how difficult many original releases became to find, turning authorised reissues into an important part of preserving the first-wave Goa catalogue.
Scene impact & cultural reach
Trans'Pact is especially significant as an example of how classic Goa Trance developed through multiple European centres , not a single UK/German/Israeli network. Its catalogue is repeatedly identified with the growth of the French psychedelic community.
Key releases & catalogue moments
Early Trans’Pact vinyl releases, the CHAP compilations, Asia 2001’s Psykadelia and other Martin Cooper projects define the classic period. Later remastered reissues by Avatar and Suntrip form the label’s main archival afterlife.
