Esoteric Festival at a glance
Esoteric Festival grew from Victoria’s bush-doof culture into a large multi-day electronic arts gathering near Donald in western Victoria. Founded in 2017, it mixed Psytrance with techno, bass music, live and alternative electronic programming while building an increasingly elaborate site of stages, art installations, workshops and wellbeing spaces.
The festival also became closely tied to the Donald community through suppliers, clubs, volunteers and local economic activity. Its trajectory changed abruptly in March 2025, when the required occupancy permit was refused immediately before opening and the festival was cancelled after crews and some attendees had already begun arriving. Esoteric Festival Pty Ltd later entered voluntary administration and ceased trading. There is no confirmed return date, so the festival is best treated as inactive rather than permanently historic.
How Esoteric Festival evolved
The first Esoteric Festival was held in 2017 and quickly developed a recognisable identity around immersive stage worlds, psychedelic art and a broad underground electronic programme. Founder and managing director Sam Goldsmith had strong links to Donald, and the event’s relationship with the town became an important part of its operation.
By 2024 Esoteric had become one of Australia’s best-known bush festivals. The 2025 edition was planned for March, but although an event permit had been granted, the separate Place of Public Entertainment occupancy approval was refused. The cancellation created major financial pressure, and the operating company entered voluntary administration in June 2025. Public comments from the founder expressed hope that the wider Esoteric community or concept could continue, but no completed restructure or later edition is confirmed.
Music, programming & dancefloors
Esoteric was never limited to a single branch of Psytrance. Psychedelic trance formed a major part of the event, but the programme also included techno, progressive electronic music, bass, downtempo and live or experimental acts across several themed areas.
That breadth made it part bush-doof, part multi-stage electronic arts festival. The psychedelic character came as much from the visual worlds, stage design and overnight atmosphere as from any one subgenre.
Role in psytrance festival culture
Esoteric became an important meeting point in the Australian psychedelic and underground electronic scene, particularly because it combined large-scale production with a rural community setting. Its relationship with Donald also showed how a remote festival can become economically and socially intertwined with its host region.
The 2025 cancellation became a wider case study in how vulnerable independent festivals can be to permitting, insurance, infrastructure and compliance costs. That episode is now part of the festival’s story , not a footnote.
Place, setting & atmosphere
Esoteric took place in rural bushland and farmland around Donald, with camping and stage precincts spread across a large outdoor site. Organiser material promoted recycling, waste reduction and care for the land, but the scale of the event also required substantial temporary infrastructure, traffic and fire-safety planning.
The 2025 permitting failure was primarily regulatory , not an environmental closure, but it underlined how closely large outdoor events depend on site safety, occupancy and local authority approval.
