Biography

Transdriver is the long-running Moscow Psytrance project of Alexey Kovalev. It developed during the formative years of the Russian psychedelic-trance scene and operated as a Kovalev–Vasily Markelov duo from 1995 to 2000. Markelov then moved into Psykovsky and other projects, while Kovalev continued Transdriver alone.

The double album Between Night and Day appeared on Vertigo Records in 2005, followed by later material including Antiethno in 2012 and releases continuing into the early 2020s. An early Moscow Psytrance project and an important link in the pre-Psykovsky history of Vasily Markelov, while also developing into Alexey Kovalev’s independent long-running catalogue.

Kovalev continued releasing Transdriver material into 2022. Historically connected to Psykovsky through Vasily Markelov and closely associated with Vertigo Records through Alexey Kovalev’s solo continuation.

Sources differ on the project’s starting point: Kovalev dates Transdriver to 1993, while other scene histories place its emergence around 1995. Kovalev and Vasily Markelov worked as a duo from 1995 to 2000.
