The story behind Mahamudra
Mahamudra emerged from southern Israel’s mid-2000s Psytrance network. The project’s core lineup comprised Ran Malka, Eyal Cohen and Sagiv Ben-Giat, with Shimi Gelman involved in technical support during the early period. The debut album Reality Is Just A Myth appeared on Utopia Records in 2007 and mixed Full-On Psytrance energy with freestyle, electro and broader rock and classical influences.
Simplicity Of Complexity followed on Tactic Records in 2009 and widened the palette further. By 2015 Mahamudra also featured drummer Gil Aizenman alongside Cohen and Malka, reflecting a later live/studio configuration. ScreenSaver marked a return in 2015, and The Indian followed in 2016 with production by Ran Malka and Eyal Cohen. Current activity is unclear. Mahamudra pushed 2000s Israeli Psytrance beyond a narrow full-on template by bringing in live-performance thinking and influences from rock, jazz, ambient and other electronic styles.
No safely attributable 2026 Mahamudra activity is currently known. The latest established release activity is from 2016; current status remains unresolved rather than labelled inactive.
