Release context
Patchwork is the first full-length Unknown Reality album in the ViralFlowMusic catalogue and establishes Ralph K. Freund’s ambient side project as something distinct from Braincell and Solar Spectrum. Created after decades of psytrance and progressive production, Unknown Reality returns to Freund’s background with guitar, modular synthesis and computer music.
The album is important because it sets the project’s basic language: electronics are combined with natural instruments, field recordings and slowly evolving structures rather than being built primarily for a trance floor. Later albums expand that idea, but Patchwork is the point where the separate identity becomes clear.
