Release context
Otagu is a 2010 Nyquist release from the project formed by FREq producer Aran Gallagher and Ben Hartley. The duo had been active since 2005, using Nyquist as a space for progressive trance and progressive-house ideas that sat alongside, but remained distinct from, Gallagher’s better-known FREq catalogue.
By 2010 the project had already accumulated several releases and remixes, so Otagu belongs to its mature period rather than its launch. It also captures the mid-2000s progressive scene’s close relationship with labels such as Iboga, where the borders between psytrance and deeper club music were deliberately porous.
