What defined Tunnel Records
Tunnel Records was founded in Hamburg in 1993 as the in-house record label connected with the Tunnel club. Its original aim was to provide a platform for electronic music being produced around Hamburg, spanning techno, trance and harder club styles.
For psytrance history, the label is especially important because it signed X-Dream early and released some of the group’s formative work at the point when German trance was beginning to overlap with the emerging Goa sound.
How Tunnel Records developed
The label began in 1993 with releases intended to represent Hamburg’s local techno and trance production. Early compilations were followed by artist records, and X-Dream quickly became one of the most significant acts connected to the imprint.
Tunnel later grew into a much broader trance brand, particularly through the Tunnel Trance Force compilation series launched in 1994. Over time the company became better known for hard trance and commercial trance, but its early releases remains relevant to psychedelic-trance history.
People, organisation & management
Tunnel Records was directly tied to Hamburg’s Tunnel club and wider event operation. The label therefore functioned as part of a larger nightlife ecosystem rather than as an isolated record company.
Sound, roster & A&R direction
The releases span techno, trance and hard trance, with a small but historically meaningful early Goa/psychedelic component. X-Dream’s early material is the clearest bridge between Tunnel’s local trance roots and the developing psytrance scene.
Place in psytrance history
Tunnel Records is important to psytrance less because the entire label was psychedelic and more because it captured X-Dream during a formative phase. That releases show how early Goa and psychedelic trance emerged partly from existing European trance and techno networks.
Scene impact & cultural reach
Its X-Dream releases form part of the bridge from early German trance into the developing Goa/Psytrance language.
Key releases & catalogue moments
Key early releases include X-Dream’s Live Fast – Die Young EP, Children of the Last Generation and later album material associated with the group. The Tunnel Trance Force series, launched in 1994, became the label’s best-known wider trance franchise.
Artists connected to the label
