What defined Sourcecode Transmissions

Sourcecode Transmissions is the artist-run label created by Wouter Thomassen, better known as Zen Mechanics. Launched in 2012, it grew from his own musical network and taste rather than from a broad corporate label strategy: a selective platform for psychedelic trance built around atmosphere, groove and carefully engineered dancefloor music.

Although often placed in the progressive-psytrance orbit, Sourcecode has always been more specific than that label suggests. Its catalogue connects progressive pacing with classic psychedelic detail, tribal rhythm, deep spatial production and the expansive festival sound associated with Zen Mechanics himself.

How Sourcecode Transmissions developed

The first Sourcecode Transmissions compilation appeared in July 2012, selected by Zen Mechanics and presented as the beginning of a new imprint. Early material brought together artists such as Vertical Mode, Dickster, E-Clip & Egorythmia, Mental Broadcast, Liftshift, Sonic Species and Earthling, immediately positioning the label inside an established international psytrance network.

The Sacred Circuits compilations and the later numbered SRCD series shifted the catalogue toward focused singles and EPs by Zen Mechanics, Nertum, Zentura, Divination, Inner Sphere, Egorythmia and related projects. The label remains active, with the official releases reaching SRCD23 in September 2026.

People, organisation & management

Wouter Thomassen/Zen Mechanics is the founder and label head. Liftshift was described as a label partner in early Sourcecode material, but the imprint has remained most clearly identified with Thomassen’s curatorial direction. Its present public location is Australia, reflecting his later base around the country’s east-coast psychedelic scene.

Sound, roster & A&R direction

Sourcecode favours polished psychedelic trance with strong groove and space. Progressive structures, rolling basslines and atmospheric detail are common, but the music typically retains a more overt psychedelic character than a purely progressive-trance label. Tribal, techno and dub-like textures appear as ingredients rather than separate label identities.

Place in psytrance history

Sourcecode is a strong example of the artist-curated label model that became increasingly important in 2010s psytrance. Instead of trying to cover an entire scene, it extends one established producer’s aesthetic and network into a focused catalogue.

Scene impact & cultural reach

The imprint links European, Israeli, Latin-American and Australian artists within a coherent festival-facing psychedelic sound, showing how a relatively compact catalogue can operate internationally when it is built around a trusted curator and artist community.

Key releases & catalogue moments

Sourcecode Transmissions Vol.1 established the label in 2012, followed by the Sacred Circuits series. The later SRCD run includes Solarians, Shores of the Subconscious, Mechanation, Primal Sphere and 2026’s Citrine, which brought the numbered catalogue to SRCD23.
