What defined Marula Music
Marula Music is the independent label run by Cape Town producer Nate Raubenheimer, better known as Protoculture. Launched as a record imprint in 2024, it gives Raubenheimer direct control over a new phase of his music while also creating space for selected outside artists.
The label is not a psytrance imprint in the traditional sense. Its catalogue is centred on progressive house, trance and melodic electronic music, but Protoculture’s roots in South African psytrance make it a relevant continuation of an artist whose career began inside the psychedelic scene.
How Marula Music developed
The label’s first release was Protoculture’s Starfield in January 2024. From there the MM catalogue expanded through a sequence of Protoculture singles including In Bloom, Migrations, Viper, Ourea and later 2025–2026 releases.
By 2026 Marula had begun bringing in additional artists, including Daniel Dee and Profetik, while continuing to function as Protoculture’s primary independent label platform.
People, organisation & management
Marula is a founder-led operation run by Nate Raubenheimer. The wider Marula Music site also includes his plugin, soundware and production-tool business, so the brand now combines a label with a one-person audio-development studio.
Sound, roster & A&R direction
The label favours progressive house, progressive trance, melodic techno and deeper trance-influenced electronic music. The production style is polished and technical but strongly melodic, reflecting Protoculture’s evolution away from his early psytrance-only identity.
Place in psytrance history
Marula is significant to the psytrance story mainly as a continuation of Protoculture’s long artistic evolution. It shows how a producer who emerged from early-2000s South African psytrance can carry elements of that melodic sensibility into contemporary progressive and trance music.
Scene impact & cultural reach
For Psytrance history, Marula is significant as a crossover/successor career context , not a Psytrance label itself.
Key releases & catalogue moments
Starfield opened the catalogue in 2024. Releases including In Bloom, Chromaflora, Atlantic Static, Skoenlapper, Frequent Flyers, Seven Sisters and Telemetry chart the label’s development through 2026.
