What defined Insomnia Records
Insomnia Records is a Moscow-based psychedelic-trance label founded at the beginning of the 2000s and one of the longest-running institutions in the Russian darkpsy scene. The label developed alongside parties and artist networks rather than as a catalogue-only business, helping define a specifically Russian approach to dark psychedelic trance.
How Insomnia Records developed
The label’s own material gives 2001 as its year of creation, while some catalogue pages use 2002; that small discrepancy reflects the transition from organising activity into formal releases. Insomnia built a roster around Russian and international darkpsy artists, continued through periods of lower visibility and later returned with new compilations, EPs and events. Releases in 2025 and 2026 confirm that the operation remains alive rather than existing only as an archive.
People, organisation & management
Insomnia presents itself as a crew of musicians, DJs and designers rather than around one heavily promoted founder. DJ Becar is closely tied to the label’s founding and compilation work, while later managers and resident DJs have contributed to its ongoing activity.
Sound, roster & A&R direction
The label is rooted in fast, hypnotic and dark psychedelic trance. Rolling basslines, dense night-time atmospheres and a strong Russian production character recur throughout the catalogue, with forest and experimental influences appearing around the edges without replacing the darkpsy core.
Place in psytrance history
Insomnia helped establish the idea of a recognisable Russian dark sound and provided long-term infrastructure for artists working outside the more commercial full-on circuit. Its endurance across more than two decades makes it one of the key labels in the history of Russian underground psytrance.
Scene impact & cultural reach
By combining releases, parties and a Moscow-based crew, the label helped connect Russian producers and audiences to the international underground Psytrance circuit.
Key releases & catalogue moments
Early-2000s Moscow releases, Cosmo’s Gravity in 2006, the long run of darkpsy compilations, the twentieth-anniversary 20 Years in Space release and new EPs continuing into 2026 mark the label’s major phases.
