What defined Bom Shanka Music

Bom Shanka Music is a Bristol-based psychedelic-trance label founded in 2007. It built its identity around a deliberately underground British sound: energetic, irreverent and dance-floor focused, with a strong preference for twisted full-on and darker psychedelic music over polished mainstream festival formulas.

How Bom Shanka Music developed

The catalogue began in 2007 with releases involving Psymmetrix and Illegal Machines and grew steadily through artists such as Dirty Saffi, Asimilon and Synthetik Chaos. Instead of chasing rapid stylistic changes, Bom Shanka developed a recognisable community around its artists, parties and visual identity. By 2026 the label had reached more than one hundred releases while continuing to introduce new producers alongside long-term members of the roster.

People, organisation & management

Bom Shanka operates as more than a download imprint, combining label releases with artist bookings, events, production services and mentorship. That integrated structure has helped it function as a scene community instead of simply a catalogue of unrelated records.

Sound, roster & A&R direction

The label specialises in underground psytrance with a strong UK full-on and night-time character. Its music is frequently playful and psychedelic without becoming lightweight, combining heavy bass pressure with unusual sound design, abrupt edits and a punk-like resistance to overly polished conventions.

Place in psytrance history

Bom Shanka is one of the most durable independent labels to emerge from the post-2005 British psytrance scene. Its longevity, artist development and continued commitment to an underground aesthetic make it an important counterpoint to the increasingly commercial festival-facing direction of parts of modern psytrance.

Scene impact & cultural reach

The label is closely tied to the UK psychedelic party circuit and to an artist-family model that connects Bristol and the wider UK Psy scene with international festivals.

Key releases & catalogue moments

The 2007 opening releases, early Psymmetrix and Illegal Machines material, later work by Dirty Saffi and Synthetik Chaos and the label’s growth beyond one hundred releases by 2026 mark the main phases of its catalogue.
