What defined Avatar Records
Avatar Records is a veteran Israeli electronic label established in 1997. Psytrance and Goa trance are central to its history, but the catalogue has always been broader, extending into ambient, chill-out and other forms of electronic music.
The label's longevity and international distribution gave it a role larger than a typical specialist imprint. It released and reissued music from important psychedelic artists while also building region-specific distribution relationships that carried trance into markets where the genre still had limited local label infrastructure.
How Avatar Records developed
Avatar developed from the late-1990s Israeli electronic scene and quickly built an international catalogue. Releases and long-term catalogue relationships include Goa Gil, The Nommos, Asia 2001, Electric Universe, Prana, Sandman, GMS, Hux Flux, Orion, Indoor, The Infinity Project, Cydonia and many others. The label also worked through major distribution partners and says its music was released through companies including Sony, Virgin, EMI and Universal in different territories.
instead of becoming purely archival, Avatar has continued to issue music in the 2020s. Recent activity includes new and remastered catalogue projects, with Retrodelic Vibes 10 released in June 2026 as part of its ongoing preservation of classic Goa-trance material.
People, organisation & management
Avatar Records operates as an independent electronic label and digital distributor. Its history includes earlier alliances and distribution relationships before developing as an independent operation with an international reach.
Sound, roster & A&R direction
Goa trance and psytrance are major pillars of the catalogue, joined by ambient, chill-out, lounge and related electronic styles. The label is particularly associated with music that connects classic Goa history to later psychedelic and downtempo forms.
Place in psytrance history
Avatar is one of the longer-running labels to bridge the original Goa-trance generation and the modern digital era. Its catalogue preserves important 1990s and 2000s psychedelic recordings while continuing to circulate them to newer audiences.
Scene impact & cultural reach
The label helped internationalise psychedelic trance through licensing and regional distribution, and its long relationships with artists such as Goa Gil, The Nommos and Asia 2001 connect Israeli label infrastructure directly to the wider global history of Goa and psytrance.
Key releases & catalogue moments
Major catalogue threads include releases by Goa Gil and The Nommos, Asia 2001 material, the Retrodelic Vibes series and continuing remastered/archive projects. The tenth Retrodelic Vibes volume in 2026 shows that historical curation remains part of the active label programme.
