Summer Never Ends at a glance

Summer Never Ends was one of Switzerland’s major Psytrance festivals, staged on the high Alpine plateau around Rona and Mulegns in Graubünden. Founded in 2006, the event combined large psychedelic dance floors with progressive, chillout, techno and live programming in a landscape that became inseparable from the festival’s identity.

Organised by Klangwerk and friends, the event grew through the late 2000s and 2010s into a substantial international gathering. By its later years it operated biennially, partly because of the workload required to build the festival and partly to reduce pressure on the agricultural land used for the site.

The final edition took place in July 2017. Attendance of roughly 9,000 was significant but below the financial target required to sustain the event, and Swiss reporting the following year confirmed that Summer Never Ends would not return. The festival is therefore historic instead of merely inactive.

How Summer Never Ends evolved

Regional Swiss reporting identifies 2006 as the first Summer Never Ends. Contemporary promotion of the 2008 event as the third edition and the 2010 gathering as the fifth supports that chronology. The festival expanded steadily on the Rona/Mulegns plateau, bringing increasingly large sound, decoration and camping infrastructure into a high-mountain agricultural landscape.

By 2017 the organisers had adopted a two-year rhythm. That final edition drew around 9,000 people but fell short of the attendance needed to make the event financially viable. Organisers publicly questioned whether another edition could be mounted, and later reporting confirmed the end of the festival.

Music, programming & dancefloors

Psytrance was the central style, supported by Progressive Psytrance, Full-On and other psychedelic forms. The event also made room for techno, minimal, chillout and live or alternative programming across several floors.

The musical arc was designed for a multi-day Alpine gathering , not a single main-stage spectacle, with different areas carrying different energy levels across day and night.

Role in psytrance festival culture

Summer Never Ends became one of the defining Swiss Psytrance gatherings of its era. Its importance came from the combination of scale and landscape: thousands of international visitors travelling into a remote Alpine valley for a temporary psychedelic town.

The event also illustrates the difficulty of sustaining large independent festivals in expensive, sensitive locations. The final decision was not a collapse of audience interest but the result of a narrow financial margin after an enormous organisational effort.

Place, setting & atmosphere

The festival occupied a patchwork of Alpine agricultural land owned by multiple farmers, making land-restoration and local relationships especially important. The later biennial rhythm was partly intended to reduce strain on the site and on the organising team.

High altitude, rapidly changing weather and limited transport infrastructure were integral to the experience. The mountain setting created the festival’s magic, but also made every edition logistically demanding.
