What defined VII
VII is a UK underground trance label/collective built around a deliberately limited artist concept. Contemporary retrospective material says John Askew conceived the label and that it came to life in 2016. Its own releases and current Black Hole profile span tech trance, melodic material, acid and Psytrance.
VII became an influential artist-curated platform in modern underground trance by combining a tightly branded crew model with crossover between hard/tech trance and psychedelic material.
How VII developed
A 2019 Simon Patterson interview states that VII came to life in 2016 from John Askew’s idea for a quality-focused label centred on seven artists. Later secondary retrospectives sometimes describe a 2015 founding or broader co-founding credit; those claims are preserved as a chronology conflict rather than silently merged. The catalogue is active through 2026.
People, organisation & management
John Askew is entered as founder/label head based on the strongest available first-person-adjacent chronology. VII’s roster has evolved over time; membership in the seven-artist collective is not the same thing as founding or ownership.
Sound, roster & A&R direction
VII is not a Psytrance-only label. Its stated identity spans Tech, Psy, Melodic and Acid trance, with Psytrance a significant recurring strand. Tech trance and melodic trance remain distinct from Psy-Techno and Progressive Psytrance.
Place in psytrance history
VII became an influential artist-curated platform in modern underground trance by combining a tightly branded crew model with crossover between hard/tech trance and psychedelic material.
Scene impact & cultural reach
The label demonstrates a contemporary boundary zone between the broader trance scene and Psytrance without collapsing those cultures into one genre.
Key releases & catalogue moments
VII releases from 2016 onward; VII Vol. I (2018); continuing catalogue with Psy-Trance and main-floor/tech-trance releases through 2026.
