What defined Phantasm Records

Phantasm Records is one of the longest-running names in British psychedelic trance. The label began in London in 1993, when Simon Carman and John Ford needed an outlet for the music they were making around Mindfield with Mark Allen and Chrisbo. That puts Phantasm close to the beginning of the UK Goa-trance story, before “psytrance” had settled into the genre language used today.

What makes Phantasm unusual is its continuity. It did not remain frozen as a 1990s Goa imprint: the catalogue moved through the harder, cleaner full-on sound of the 2000s and into contemporary psychedelic trance, while the label continued to make its early material available.

How Phantasm Records developed

The first Phantasm releases appeared in 1993. Through the 1990s the label became associated with Mindfield and a wider network of British and European Goa-trance artists, while its Fill Your Head With Phantasm compilations became a recurring way of documenting the label’s direction. Phantasm also operated the sister imprint Psychic Deli, whose releases fed into the same late-1990s scene.

During the 2000s the catalogue shifted with psytrance itself. Artists such as Eskimo, Dickster and Mad Maxx brought a more modern, full-on sound, but the label retained the Phantasm identity rather than relaunching under a new brand. That continuity has continued into the 2020s. Fill Your Head With Phantasm Vol. 11 arrived in January 2026, and further releases followed through the summer of 2026.

People, organisation & management

Phantasm was formed by Simon Carman and John Ford from within the Mindfield circle. Its roots are therefore artist-led rather than corporate: the label was created because the musicians around it needed a release platform. Over time it developed into a broader roster and catalogue operation while preserving that original London identity.

The label’s history also overlaps closely with Psychic Deli Records, its sister imprint during the 1990s. Material from both catalogues has later been resurfaced digitally, making Phantasm both a functioning contemporary label and a custodian of part of the early UK psychedelic-trance archive.

Sound, roster & A&R direction

The early Phantasm catalogue sits firmly in classic Goa trance: long-form psychedelic arrangements, melodic sequencing and the exploratory production language of the mid-1990s. Later releases moved toward full-on and modern psytrance, with tighter low-end, more direct dance-floor construction and a broader international roster.

That stylistic movement is one of the label’s defining features. Phantasm is neither a simple revival label nor one tied to a single subgenre; its releases cover several generations of psychedelic trance under the same name.

Place in psytrance history

Phantasm belongs to the small group of independent British labels that helped give Goa and psychedelic trance a durable release infrastructure in the early 1990s. Its importance comes not only from age but from longevity: very few labels from that formative period are still issuing genuinely new psychedelic music more than three decades later.

Scene impact & cultural reach

Its longevity links the formative UK Goa network of the early 1990s to contemporary Psytrance. The 2026 sub-label expansion also shows how a historic psychedelic brand can branch into adjacent club forms without erasing its original identity.

Key releases & catalogue moments

The 1993 launch, the early Mindfield period and the recurring Fill Your Head With Phantasm series are central landmarks. The 1990s relationship with Psychic Deli, the 2000s full-on period around artists such as Eskimo and Dickster, and the 2026 releases show how the catalogue has repeatedly renewed itself without abandoning its history.
