What defined Moon Spirits Records

Moon Spirits Records was a French psychedelic-trance label that became strongly associated with the melodic side of the early-2000s scene. Its catalogue is particularly linked with Silicon Sound, whose album Pure Analog was released through Moon Spirits in 2003.

The label’s output connected full-on psytrance with cleaner progressive and melodic production, giving it a recognisable place in the French and wider European scene during the 2000s.

How Moon Spirits Records developed

Moon Spirits was active from around the turn of the millennium and developed a catalogue around emerging psychedelic producers. By 2012 the label was describing a history of roughly twelve years and highlighting Silicon Sound as one of its important discoveries.

Later activity included compilations such as Nu Midgard and planned artist projects from Kinesis and Voyager’s progressive project Ocean. The label’s public activity eventually faded, leaving a largely older releases.

People, organisation & management

Moon Spirits operated as an independent French psytrance label and artist-development platform. Its catalogue and interviews show an emphasis on discovering producers as well as maintaining longer-running artist relationships instead of functioning only as a compilation brand.

Sound, roster & A&R direction

The label leaned toward polished psychedelic trance with strong melodic and progressive elements. Silicon Sound’s finely detailed, futuristic production strongly reflects the aesthetic associated with Moon Spirits.

Place in psytrance history

Moon Spirits belongs to the generation of European labels that helped shape psytrance after the classic Goa era, when production became cleaner and the scene split into full-on, progressive and other increasingly distinct strands. Its association with Silicon Sound gives the catalogue lasting relevance.
