What defined Boom! Records

BooM! Records is a Dutch psychedelic-trance label founded in Groningen in 1996 by DJ Matt BooM! and Remko. The label built its identity around independent psytrance with an emphasis on music that worked directly on the dancefloor.

Its catalogue mixed established artists with newcomers encountered through the international trance circuit. Over the years that included Battle of the Future Buddhas, Fractal Glider, Rastaliens, Solar Spectrum, Braincell, Logic Bomb, Chi-A.D., Quadra and Ubar Tmar.

How Boom! Records developed

Founded in 1996, BooM! became one of the longer-running independent psytrance imprints in the Netherlands. Its releases developed alongside the European scene’s shift away from classic Goa and toward a wider range of psychedelic styles in the late 1990s and 2000s.

The label’s own description stresses discovery as much as established names: artists were often found through the founders’ travels and party connections, with releases selected primarily for dancefloor impact.

People, organisation & management

BooM! was founded and based in Groningen by DJ Matt BooM! and Remko. It also operated the Superstring Records sublabel, giving the organisation room to separate parts of its catalogue while keeping the main BooM! identity focused on psychedelic trance.

Sound, roster & A&R direction

The label has described its sound as varied but generally hard, melodic and uplifting. Humour and a sense of fun were also part of the house identity, distinguishing BooM! from labels that pursued a darker or more austere psychedelic aesthetic.

Place in psytrance history

BooM! helped sustain an independent Dutch psytrance infrastructure outside the country’s better-known mainstream trance industry. Its international artist mix and longevity made it a useful bridge between the late Goa period and the more stylistically diverse psytrance scene of the 2000s.
