Explore Brazilian Psytrance from reported Bahia roots and 1990s rave growth to Universo Paralello, national festival networks, artists and contemporary labels.

How Psytrance spread across Brazil

Brazilian Psytrance did not grow from one city or one promoter. Its history stretches across beaches, clubs, rural gatherings and regional festival networks, with Bahia, São Paulo and central Brazil each contributing different pieces of the culture.

Universo Paralello became the scene’s most visible institution, but it arrived after years of smaller activity. The festival traces its own story to a 1997 New Year gathering created by Juarez Petrillo, better known as Swarup, and friends. It adopted a festival format in Chapada dos Veadeiros in 2000 before moving to Praia de Pratigi in Bahia in 2003.

That move helped turn a local party lineage into an international destination. At the same time, Brazil’s sheer size meant that independent crews, producers and labels continued to develop far beyond Pratigi. São Paulo nightlife, beach communities, inland events and regional artists all became part of a scene that could be both intensely local and globally connected.

Scale, festivals and a global Brazilian presence

Brazil’s influence comes from scale as much as sound. Psytrance was absorbed into very different landscapes and communities, then returned to the international circuit through touring artists, labels and festivals.

Universo Paralello gave that process a globally recognised meeting point, while the wider national network stopped Brazilian Psytrance from being reducible to a single festival. The result is one of the genre’s largest and most varied national cultures.

A national scene made of distinct regional cultures

Brazilian Psytrance is geographically huge and highly regional. São Paulo, Goiás, Bahia and other areas developed different event cultures, while Universo Paralello became the best-known international meeting point. The festival is an important anchor, but it is not a complete map of Brazilian Psytrance.

Where to follow Brazilian Psytrance now
