What defined Metropolis Records
Metropolis Records is a Philadelphia independent label founded by Dave Heckman in 1993. Its core identity is industrial, EBM, synthpop, futurepop, darkwave and other forms of alternative electronic music rather than psytrance, but it intersects meaningfully with psychedelic electronic history through Juno Reactor.
Metropolis should not be presented as a psytrance label; its relevance comes from the way it carried Juno Reactor's music into a broader North American alternative-electronic market and kept a substantial part of the group's catalogue available.
How Metropolis Records developed
Metropolis grew out of Dave Heckman and Gail Heckman's Philadelphia record shop Digital Underground, which specialised in importing difficult-to-find European industrial and darkwave releases. Heckman began building the label in 1993, and its first records appeared in May 1994. From those beginnings it developed rapidly into one of the principal North American homes for dark electronic music.
By the end of the 1990s the catalogue had expanded well beyond licensing European records, with direct artist signings and a growing role in the futurepop and electro-industrial scenes. Juno Reactor became one of the points where that releases crossed into psychedelic and trance culture. Metropolis later reissued early Juno Reactor albums including Transmissions, Luciana, Beyond the Infinite and Bible of Dreams, alongside later releases.
People, organisation & management
Dave Heckman founded Metropolis and led it for nearly three decades. After his death in July 2022, the company continued operating rather than closing with its founder, preserving both its active roster and a large catalogue of underground electronic music.
Sound, roster & A&R direction
Metropolis is defined primarily by industrial, EBM, synthpop, futurepop, darkwave, gothic and related electronic styles. Psytrance is peripheral to the label's overall identity, but Juno Reactor's presence gives it a genuine historical connection to the psychedelic-trance world.
Place in psytrance history
For the wider electronic underground, Metropolis became a major North American platform for European and international dark electronic music. Within a psytrance context, its significance is narrower but still useful: it shows how Juno Reactor crossed beyond Goa and psytrance channels into industrial, gothic and alternative-electronic audiences.
