What defined Concept in Dance
Concept In Dance was a short-lived UK label division connected to XL Recordings during the first wave of Goa trance. Its small catalogue had an influence far beyond its size, bringing early Man With No Name material and compilation-based Goa trance to a wider dance-music audience.
How Concept in Dance developed
The label emerged in the mid-1990s, when Goa trance was only beginning to be treated as a distinct international style. Concept In Dance 1 gathered early material by Man With No Name, Ayahuasca, Universal Sound and Voodoo People, while later releases such as Tribal Science widened the scope with artists including Hallucinogen, The Infinity Project, Psychaos and Cydonia. Concept In Dance also issued Man With No Name's Moment of Truth, one of the defining early UK Goa-trance albums.
The imprint did not become a long-running independent label. Its importance comes from a concentrated mid-1990s catalogue and the distribution reach it gained through its connection with XL Recordings.
People, organisation & management
Concept In Dance functioned as a division/imprint associated with XL Recordings rather than as a fully separate long-term company. Contemporary release credits place the label directly alongside XL.
Sound, roster & A&R direction
Early Goa trance and psychedelic trance, with a strong acid-trance and UK club-music edge typical of the genre's formative 1994–96 period.
Place in psytrance history
Concept In Dance belongs to the first generation of UK labels that helped turn Goa trance from a party-network sound into a recognisable record-store and album category. Its releases captured several artists at the point when the style was becoming internationally defined.
Scene impact & cultural reach
The label helped move Goa-trance music into wider UK and overseas distribution channels, giving early psychedelic-trance recordings exposure beyond specialist parties and import shops.
Key releases & catalogue moments
Concept In Dance 1 (1994), Tribal Science (1995) and Man With No Name's Moment of Truth (1996) form the core of the label's Goa-trance legacy.
